Russia has vetoed in the UN Security Council a draft resolution of Norway and Ireland on Syria on extending the operation of the Bab al-Hawa checkpoint for a year for the cross-border delivery of humanitarian aid to the country. This is reported by RIA Novosti.
The draft resolution prepared by the two Western countries assumed that the work of the checkpoint would be extended for six months — from July 10 to January 10, 2023. Moscow voted against. The PRC abstained. The remaining members of the Security Council supported the adoption of the draft.
According to the resolution adopted a year ago, the condition for extending the work of the checkpoint was, among other things, increasing the supply of humanitarian aid through the contact lines on the territory of Syria, and not from abroad. Russia has repeatedly indicated over the past year that this condition is not fulfilled.
As the Syrian army began to establish control over more and more territory, Damascus and Moscow began to advocate the gradual curtailment of border crossings.
In June, The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials, reported that the United States is concerned about Russia's actions in Syria because of the alleged conduct by the Russian armed forces of a series of operations against the United States-led coalition. According to them, Russia has conducted operations this month, including one this week at a strategically located base in the southern part of the country.
